This area embraces the volunteer work centered on establishing and maintaining a long-term relationship between a child and an adult, or between two adults. Examples include the ties established through the exchange-student programs linking students with their host families and through the youth programs linking troubled adolescents with adult mentors. Mentoring, which is sometimes confused with coaching and consultation, is most accurately seen as a kind of informal volunteering (Stebbins, 2006). Volunteers serving in the programs of Big Brothers and Big Sisters International (now active in thirteen countries) develop similar ties with their clients. The welcoming programs for new residents are organized around the formation of interpersonal relationships between newcomers to the community and established local residents.
